One of the greatest shifts of our generation is the desire to find a sense of purpose in the workplace. This has only been accelerated by the pandemic and is one of the drivers of ‘The Great Resignation’.
Millennials and GenZ now make up most of the world’s workforce. They care less about security and more about impact. They want to feel that they are using their skills for good. That they are making a difference and their work is valued and appreciated. Otherwise, they’ll leave for more meaningful pastures – or the good ones will at least.
The question that can transform your culture.
Not all companies are on the Patagonia trajectory – where all profits will now be used to combat climate change and protect undeveloped land around the globe. However, there is a simple question that can help inject a sense of purpose in your team.
“Tell me about a time you made a difference”
This is the question I recommend reflecting on in your regular team meetings. Spending the first 5 – 10 minutes of a meeting talking about the positive impact someone in the team has made instils a sense of pride in the individual. This has ongoing impacts for the individual and, in turn, the organisation.
Key tip: often these proud moments can make great content for the socials. Double win.
If your organisation has a clear purpose and articulated impact statement (regardless of the industry) you will find that staff can more easily come up with examples of pride that are directly related to their work. However, If your organisation is yet to articulate your core purpose (or why you do what you do), or you haven’t articulated an impact statement, then STOP what you’re doing and dial-a-Smoothie!
